Westward Seafoods, Inc. Safety Assistant - Northern Victor in Dutch Harbor, Alaska
SPECIFIC DUTIES INCLUDE:
- Assist in the implementation, training, and compliance with WSI's safety standard operating procedures and programs.
- Locate and properly document safety violations and deficiencies.
- Responsible for the clerical duties associated with the safety department (OSHA Logs, State Forms, W/C Requests, Medical Paperwork, Training Logs)
- Assist the safety manager during emergency situations.
- Work closely with other department supervisors, foremen, and leads to ensure WSI's safety standard operating procedures and programs are implemented and followed.
- Other duties as assigned by the safety manager or vessel manager.
Physical Requirements:
- While performing the duties of this job, the team member is regularly required to see, and hear.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- The team member is regularly required to walk, stand, and reach with arms and hands.
- Ability to frequently lift and move up to 60 lbs.
- Team member is exposed to airborne particles, fumes, and water spray.
- Team member works near moving mechanical parts, machines, and equipment.
- Team member will be frequently exposed to a loud environment and noise.
- Team member must be able to work 12-hour shifts/7 days a week during processing seasons.
- Must maintain good physical fitness and strength
- Must possess a high moral of honesty, integrity, and judgment
Qualifications and Education Requirements:
- Knowledge of creating and maintaining a safe work environment.
- Knowledge of HIPAA practices and policies
- Ability to identify and report safety hazards.
- Prompt arrival and attendance.
- Ability to communicate, comprehend, speak, read, and write in the English language.
- Ability to function as part of a team, with co-workers, supervisors, management, and other departments.
- Ability to familiarize yourself with WSI's policies regarding conduct, behavior, and safety standard operation procedures.
- Ability to remain aware and observant of surroundings, possess and exercise superior judgment when the situation demands it.
- Willing to work different shifts as needed.
- Required to have great interpersonal and communication skills when dealing with team members, visitors, and management.
- Ability to remain calm and in control in extreme situations.
- Ability to work well with local, state, and federal law enforcement, emergency services, harbor master, and United States Coast Guard
- Must be willing to work and live in a multi-cultural environment.
- Knowledge and experience in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Must be able to obtain a valid Alaska driver's license within 30 days.
- Must possess a valid TWIC (Transportation Workers Identification Credentials) card or be able to obtain it within 30 days.
- Prior safety, law enforcement, and/or military experience preferred.
- First Aid/CPR/AED certification or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
- EMT-1 certification or ability to obtain within 1 year of hire.
REPORTS TO: This position reports directly to the safety manager. In the absence of the safety manager, the safety assistant will report to the safety lead.
